I'm listening to The Witch's Hat podcast episode 7 right now. And Root Rot's brought up a great topic, about podcasters who give a good review to a film/book/whatever that didn't deserve it.
Any thoughts or opinions about this? Have you done this (don't name names if you don't want since this forum is visible to the public).
I'll say that I've never given a good review to a bad film. I have been a little more enthusiastic in discussing their product. I never lied: I just was a little more generous than necessary.

I may not always be the most "articulate" with my thoughts, but when I honestly dislike something to my full extent, I make no secret about it. My approach to reviewing is to try finding stuff I liked, and make note to talk about it. That's why, even in my streak of wavering opinion movies as of late, I still talk about amusing bits. But since having a director on the show probably will NEVER happen, I need not worry about kissing ass, because I'm only just stating my opinions on what I review.

This is a very difficult delimma. It happened to me recently that I had a director's movie and it was really difficult to review it for me because I really want to be polite and respect the creator's work, but I REALLY didn't like the movie.
I gave the director all the exposure I could, but politely decided not to review the movie. Might not be the right approach, but I didn't know what else to do. I don't like to be overly negative in reviews, at least solo reviews.

I don't like to be overly negative in reviews, at least solo reviews. My film for this week was bad, and it was one where I asked the producers if I could get a screener in order to review it. I say in the review that it's a borrow at best, and I pointed out where the film could have been better.

nothing wrong with being subtle. but like I said before any publicity is good publicity. I did an expariment on twitter months back. I posted about how much I hated a certain film, I went on & on, bashing it to no end. within 10 min. 7 people were curious & said they HAD to see the film. true story.

I just don't like being negative because that's what turns ME off in the horror community. But honesty is honesty

I just don't like being negative because that's what turns ME off in the horror community. But honesty is honesty That's why I go the route I do (unless the movie is particularly dumb, which is different from just being bad). Rather than focusing on the negative, I'll instead go with how the movie could have been done better. That way you can at least get a dialog going with how the next director/writer/producer can create a film that avoids those errors. Now whether other makers listen is another story entirely....

I just don't like being negative because that's what turns ME off in the horror community. But honesty is honesty Even with stuff I'm rather "Meh" about, I do try to find some good stuff to talk about, or at least riff on. ... Unless it's another "Pocket Ninjas" or "Streets of Rage". That crap will set... me... OFF.
