I'm currently reading the Countdown To Final Crisis comics. I had heard from a few people online that this was confusing, but so far (I'm on issue 42 counting backwards) I'm not confused at all.
I was confused when I tried to just read the Final Crisis trade without the lead up stories. Specifically about the Monitors and what they were doing. But now I'm starting to get it, at least a little.
Anybody else read this series? What are you thoughts?

Aside from the Jimmy Olsen stuff, I didn't hate "Countdown". Probably the BEST stuff of that series was the Pied Piper material. And the final conclusion... albeit covered better in "Death of the New Gods"... was still entertaining!

I made a mistake and read a clip from Wikipedia regarding Jimmy Olsen and got a spoiler for my troubles. I am kind of enjoying the way it's unrolling now that I'm halfway through the 51 issues.

Didn't read much of this, but it looked really lackluster

Grey, for the actual "New Gods" material, I'd probably say track down Jim Starlin's "Death of the New Gods". It was done around the exact same time, and I feel it covered that stuff better. But I would at least suggest you look into one of the "Countdown" trades to just get a sampler. (And to maybe ogle at Jimmy's Bug "girlfriend". Dude gets PLAY!)

Didn't read much of this, but it looked really lackluster I wouldn't say it's that. But there is a little bit of background that the reader needs. While the series did a good job of filling in a lot of the gaps for readers (I think they wrote it specifically to bring new readers into the events) you still needed to know who was who. For example, the Mary Marvel story depends on understanding what happened to Captain Marvel and the old wizard, as well as Black Adam. And being that I never followed them I was totally lost at first why she was depowered and why Black Adam was hiding in an abandoned building in Gotham City.

Oh yeah! I forgot all about that Mary Marvel storyline! It was actually pretty interesting... until it wrapped up the first time, and Darkseid basically rebooted it.
